Spring Break part 1: Camping in paradise

It’s been too long since my last post, so why not make a double post!

Last week was spring break! Which was amazing. I spent the whole week in Queensland – camped for 3 days on Whitsunday Island at Whitehaven Beach, visited refreshing waterfalls and went on a boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I didn’t do it by myself, but i had the pleasure of traveling with 6 friends from UTS, all with different nationalities.

This part will cover camping at Whitehaven Beach.

Don’t want to read? Just scroll down to the bottom, there’s a cool little video!

Day 1 – Travel day

The first day was all about traveling to Airlie Beach. We had a 2.5 hour flight from Sydney to Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport), and secondly a 30 minute taxi trip to Airlie Beach. The humidity and temperature was way higher than in Sydney, which made walking with your luggage a sweaty experience. After checking in at Nomads Hostel (20 AUD per person) and buying food for the island trip at the local Woolworths, we went to a saltwater pool. The beach was less appealing due to rocks and a low tide.

The first day was all about chill and getting the last things sorted before going to the island. Nothing can be bought or rented at the island, the only luxury is a toilet.

Day 2 – Getting to Whitehaven Beach and kayaking

We slept at the hostel for one night, but now it was time to get to the island. The taxi boat left at 0700 in the morning, so sleeping in was not a possibility. We rented 2 kayaks and some of the others rented tents and kitchenware from the taxi boat company. We packed everything on the boat and left the mainland. After 1,5 hour boat ride (155 AUD for a return ticket) we arrived at Whitehaven Beach. The beach offers a campsite, which allows for a maximum of 36 campers per night.

After settling in, four of us went kayaking. Whitehaven Beach is 7 km long and we decided to paddle from end to end. It was harder than expected, but without a doubt totally worth it. We got the chance to walk on the finest sand and to see several stingrays, flying fish and even a turtle!

Day 3 – Morning swim, run and small hike

The day started out with a refreshing swim and a 14 km run. Apparently it is not a good idea to run in sand for that long without any shoes! I found out the hard way, by obtaining blisters under my big toes.

After getting breakfast, five of us went for a small hike. We ended up on another beach, which we used for a couple of hours of relaxation.

Day 4 – Walking along the beach

Everyone visiting the Whitsundays, always go to a specific viewpoint. Since it was our last day, we decided to go there as well. After walking 7 km along the beach, we experienced a minor challenge. The tide made it impossible to walk to the viewpoint directly and we had to swim across an inlet to get there. Only three of us, were up to the challenge. After experiencing the astonishing view we went back to the others, this time a low tide made it possible to cross without swimming.

Tidevandet gjort det umuligt at krydse noget vand uden at svømme.

Day 5 – Back to civilization

Last morning on the island before returning to Airlie Beach. It have been a good couple of days, but everything good always come to an end. In the next part, I will write about the last days of the Spring Break.

Animals

People are always joking about how Australian animals always want to kill people, but they have some cute animals as well. On the island we saw a lot of lace monitors, a possum and a big humpback whale! It was amazing! We were just having our morning coffee, when we suddenly became aware of something big in the ocean!

The following video sums it all up!

Den følgende video opsummerer hele første del.
